Scope of Practice

I am a licensed professional and I am held to the highest standards of both Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP) and Texas Department of State Health Services. Massage Therapy is a profession in which the scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body normalizes those tissues. Massage Therapy consists of manual techniques that include applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, and/or causing movement of /to the body, with the intention of positively affecting the health and well-being of the client.

I do not diagnose illness, disease or any other physical or mental disorder. As such, I do not prescribe medical treatment or pharmaceuticals nor are any spinal adjustments performed.

EXISTING AND NEW MEDICAL CONDITIONS

It is the responsibility of the client to notify me of any current medications and/or medical treatments taken. Massage therapy is not a substitute for medical attention, and it is essential that all health information provided be true and correct. I am not allowed to provide treatment for specific conditions without a doctor's notice. I am required to refer you for diagnosis and to follow the recommendations of your physician. In certain cases, it may be necessary for clients to provide written permission from their physician, chiropractor, physical therapist, etc., that therapeutic massage may continue.

RESPECT FOR CLIENT NEEDS AND BOUNDARIES

The client may disrobe according to his/her comfort level.

The client may refuse any massage technique that is uncomfortable.

The client may stop the massage at any point and is free to leave.

The client will always be modestly draped. Only the area being massaged will be undraped. The client will be kept informed of the area to be massaged.

On occasion, an emotional response to massage occurs. If this happens, it is ok to express those feelings in our safe, nonjudgmental environment - or you may request privacy and end the session. You are in control.

PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARIES

As a matter of therapeutic treatment, low back, hip & gluteal area will be massaged ONLY with permission and can be worked through the draping, if requested. I retain the right to refuse service to anyone. Either therapist or client may end the session at any time. If the session is ended by the therapist due to Sexual Misconduct, full payment is due. If the therapist feels at any point his safety is compromised, the session will end immediately, authorities may be called and full payment is due.

Inappropriate sexual requests are not tolerated. Such requests will be viewed as solicitation, and reported to the proper authorities. The breast and genital areas will not be massaged under any circumstances. Permission will be requested before working close to these areas; otherwise, a professional distance will be maintained. In accordance with my personal code of conduct and by the rules and guidelines established by the governing agencies for professional message therapy, significant penalties apply for inappropriate conduct. Therefore, clients engaging in such behavior will not be scheduled for future appointments.

CONFIDENTIALITY AND CONVERSATION

All discussions are held in strict confidence. It is the client’s prerogative whether or not to talk during the massage. I am happy to listen to your conversation and share my professional expertise.
